报告题目 The State of Art in Fast Algorithms for Scattering Theory

Abstract: During the last two decades, numerical techniques for the solution of scattering problems have been experiencing rapid progress. The principle breakthrough has been the discovery of “fast” techniques for the numerical evaluation of applying certain operators to an arbitrary vector. The effect of these developments on the numerical solution of scattering problems is similar to the effect of FFT on signal processing, in that many previously intractable computational tasks are becoming routine.
In this talk, we give an overview of the fast multipole method (FMM) when applied to the numerical solution for scattering problems: starting from integral equation formulation of the problems, discretization schemes, and solution methods based on the FMM. We will also briefly outline the new frontier in fast algorithms for scattering theory: fast direct solvers.
