报告题目: Gene, Protein, Cell and Mechanics    What and How Can Applied Mathematics and Mechanics Contribute to Health Research?

Abstract: Gene expresses, protein activates and cell proliferates and apoptosis all the time. Can mathematics/mechanics help understand, predict, control and utilize the reactions to improve our well beings? I shall report on some of the ongoing work on cell responses under mechanical stimulations in the Bioengineering Department of the University of California at San Diego. The hope is to provoke thoughts on what applied mathematics/mechanics can do in health research; how applied mathematics/mechanics can be employed in health research; and even more wishfully, to translate the thoughts into actions for health research.
