报告题目: Understanding Crystal Plasticity by Dislocation Dynamics
报告摘要:
Quantitative prediction of crystals plastic strength based on their microscopic physics has been the dream of computational materials scientists for many years. It remains a grand challenge to date, because the activities of dislocations - the underlying carrier of plasticity, are very complex and span a wide range of length and time scales. This talk presents several advances towards reaching this goal by connecting atomistic and higher scale models of crystal plasticity. First, large-scale molecular dynamics simulations reveal an important yet previously not appreciated transition in the mode of dislocation motion in iron. Second, a self-consistent continuum theory for dislocation is developed which removes the singularity associated in the classical theory. Third, a massively parallel dislocation dynamics code models the collective behavior of a large number of interacting dislocation lines and directly computes materials response to virtual mechanical tests.
