The Gaussian beam method is a particle-type method mainly applied to wave-type equations. It decomposes the solution into a number of Gaussian beams with small variances and evolves each Gaussian beam independently. In this talk, we will discuss two applications of the Gaussian beam method. The first application is the surface hopping Gaussian beam method with applications to quantum-classical Liouville equations. It mimics Tully's surface hopping algorithm and lets the beams jump between energy surfaces. The second application is the combination of the Gaussian beam method and the inchworm method, which can be used to solve open quantum systems where the system is described by the Schrödinger equation. Both approaches are easy to implement and show good parallelizability.
